She sets out to get him, with only days before the wedding, asking her gay friend George Downes (Rupert Everett) to pretend they are engaged, hoping to make Michael jealous.

-          The object of my affection (1998). A pregnant New York social worker begins to develop romantic feelings for her gay best friend, and decides she'd rather raise her child with him, much to the dismay of her overbearing boyfriend.

Fag Hag - Lilly Allen

The singer Lilly Allen included a song about Fag Hags in her album "It is not me, It is you".

Fag Hag - Lilly Allen
I like apple pie
And you like banoffee
We both love shopping for furniture
And meeting for coffee
We pretend we're into art galleries
'Cause it makes us feel clever
We're both in our element when we're on our knees
Whatever the weather

I could be your fag hag
And you could be my gay
I'll never make you feel sad
When you come out to play

I could be your fag hag
And you could be my gay
I'll never make you feel sad
When you come out to play

We don't give a fuck
What people are thinking
I know you'll always look out for me
When we go out drinking
I can ask you things I can't ask anyone
And you'll give me direction
Apart from me, you're the only other person I know
Who reads the travel section

I could be your fag hag
And you could be my gay
I'll never make you feel sad
When you come out to play

Pride Parade

A real Fag Hag has to support her gay friends. One of the best ways to do it is to join them in the Pride Parade. A Pride Parade is an event celebrating gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) culture. These events also serve as demonstrations for legal rights such as same-sex marriage.
I only have been in one Pride Parade, the Pride Barcelona. It was an amazing day for me. I took pictures with everyone, I met new friends, I danced with everyone… I loved it! The funny thing is that my gay friends hate Pride Barcelona (and all the Pride Parades in general). They don’t feel represented with the ambient of the Parades, and they don’t think that fighting for their rights should be done in a Parade. Also, usually the media interview and film the weirdest people –just to get more audience-, and these images are what everyone watches. So, for example, my grandmother thinks that all my gay friends are like that weird people that appear on TV. In conclusion, for my gay friends there is a problem of representation of gay society by the media.

Pride Barcelona is a big event in Spain, and it takes place between the 22nd of May and the 1st of July, but the most famous one is in Madrid. However, this year I think I will go to Pride London. It takes place between the 23rd of June and the 8th of July. If anyone wants to come, you can join me!

Here you have the Pride London and Pride Barcelona website:

Fag Hags Documentary

Searching for more definitions of the new social role of Fag Hags, I have just discovered a documentary from 2005 that analyzes the role and characteristics of them. The documentary is called Fag Hags “Women who love gay men”, and it was produced by Red Queen Productions.

Fag Hags “Women who love gay men” is an hour-long documentary about the unique bonds that exist between women and gay men. Ranging from platonic friendship to romance, to unrequited love, the film profiles three couples in the midst of their “queer” love stories. Fag Hags also looks at a new generation of women who are reclaiming these two derogatory words as a badge of honour, including witty commentary from the queen of self-proclaimed Fag Hags, Margaret Cho.
Women throughout the film is the evolution of pop culture representations of these relationship, from the campy “sick and twisted” portrayal in the 1959 film Suddenly last summer to the popular television series Will and Grace.  Funny, irreverent and poignant, Fag Hags go beyond Will and Grace to reveal the complexity of love and friendship between women and gay men.

Directed by: Justine Pimlott
Writer: Maya Gallus

If you click on this link, you will have access to this fantastic documentary. I have tried to find the movie in English, but you need to purchase the DVD. I only have found it in Spanish, so you will have problems to understand it, although some parts are in English. Sorry for that! I hope you enjoy it.

Fag Hags - The English version of Mariliendres

As my friend King explained me (thanks King!), the English version of Mariliendre is Fag Hag. I have been looking for that term and, although at the beginning it was used as an insult, nowadays it is used as a common term.

We can find the definition of Fag Hag in the Wikipedia:
Fag hag is a gay slang phrase referring to a woman who either associates mostly or exclusively with gay and bisexual men, or has gay and bisexual men as close friends. The phrase originated in gay male culture in the United States and was historically an insult. Some women who associate with gay men object to being called fag hags, while others embrace the term. The male counterpart, for men who have similar interpersonal relationships with gay and bisexual men is fag stag, part of hag-ism, the identification of a person with a group—usually united in terms of sexuality, gender identity, or shared sex—of which he or she is not officially a member. However, it must be stated that some, if not many "fag stag" "relationships" are merely the result of straight men who go to gay bars with gay men in order to "pick up" straight women, as the gay bar scene is considered to be a safe one for straight women, hence, their usual social defenses would be in a far more relaxed state than they would be if the meeting occurred in a straight singles bar. For men who have many lesbian friends the slang terms Dutch Boy, lesbro or dyke tyke apply.
Fag hags are frequently stereotyped as outgoing women who are seeking a substitute for heterosexual relationships, or who are secretly (or openly) sexually attracted to gay men. In fact, many women who identify as fag hags are already in romantic relationships, either with straight men or with women but appreciate the alternative experience of socializing with gay men and may prefer the gay culture to the straight counterpart. In contrast, women with open sexual interest in gay (or bisexual) men call themselves girlfags.
In interviews with gay men and self-described fag hags, the most common theme is safety. A rich relationship can develop between a straight woman and a gay man without sexual tension. The fag hag relationship allows the participants to separate intimacy and sexuality.

That definition is really interesting in some points. I do agree in the last part of it, where it explains that the most common theme between fag hags and gays is safety. I have been in a relationship since 2 years ago, and I know that I can go out, dance and sleep with my gay friends and nothing will happen. In fact, they have visited me in London and I have been sleeping with them without any problems. People ask me if I tell my boyfriend that I sleep with my gay friends, and the answer is always the same “Of course, I do!”. There is no sexual tension between a Fag hag and a gay guy, it is all about respect and intimacy.
What I don’t agree about is the following statement “Fag hags are frequently stereotyped as outgoing women who are seeking a substitute for heterosexual relationships, or who are secretly (or openly) sexually attracted to gay men”. I have been reading in many blogs that Fag hags are women that are secretly in love with their gay friends. Why there it should be any kind of attraction or love between the two of them? Why do Fag Hags need to be secretly in love with gay men? It seems that we can’t think about natural and innocent relationships, can we?

Mariliendre

Ok, I have to admit it. I am a true fan of the Gay World. This is the reason why my blog is called "Rainbow" (as you may know, rainbows are one of the symbols of the gay movement). Sometimes I ask myself why I love that world so much… Could it be because all my best friends are gay? Or maybe they are my best friends because they are gay… Anyway, I am a passionate of that world. I love gay clubs, gay icons, gay music... Everything!  In Spain, we have a word to describe a gay’s best-hetero-girl-friend: Mariliendre. A Mariliendre always go out with gay people, she goes to gays club with them, and she is very active in relation to all the gay movement and cause. Mariliendres adore gay people and gay people adore Mariliendres. A Mariliendre is THE friend, not just another friend. I consider myself (and my gay friends do it too) a Mariliendre. I love going out to gay clubs with my gay friends, I have an amazing gay radar, I love Lady Gaga… I am the perfect definition of a Mariliendre! The term Mariliendre could be defined as a new social role, completely unknown at a theoretical level, but easily detected at a social level, especially between the gay collective. So this blog will analyze my role as a Mariliendre, how it affects me and my friends, and how affects my consumer behaviour and my social relations.

I hope you will enjoy it! J
